Hey ALAMinators!
It’s no secret that I love TV shows. I mean, my first ALAM article was about Brooklyn Nine-Nine. However, I wouldn’t say it’s an unhealthy amount of hours I spend watching, procrastinating and falling in love with fictional characters. But it’s definitely enough to compile a list of shows that everybody can start watching while their procrastinating homework.
Good Girls
I discovered this show during the summer, and I honestly didn't expect this show to take the dark turn that it did. I thought it would be your generic coming of age comedy that has the same unromantic tropes as any other Netflix show. I was mistaken; this is probably one of the most original shows on Netflix.
Plot: Beth and Annie are sisters, and they share one best friend, Ruby. Beth displays herself as the picture-perfect wife and mom, but she's trying to deal keeping her whole house in order because her cheating husband lost all their money. Annie is caught in a custody battle for her son between her and ex. Ruby is the only one with a happy marriage, but her daughter is very ill, and she and her husband can't afford the medical bills. So what do these women do? They rob a grocery store. But now they are under scrutiny and continuously harassed by a gang leader who claims that the money they robbed was rightfully his.
Seasons: 10, new season coming in 2019.
Eye Candy
This wasn't a very well known TV show, the reason why there was only 1 season was due to the limited amount of viewers the show received, which is INSANE to me because this is such a good thriller series. One of the main reasons why I found it so appealing was because the plot is based on online dating and how powerful technology can be.
Plot: A 21-year-old computer whiz named Lindy Sampson witnessed her younger sister get abducted. Ever since then she has used her digital skills to try and track down her down. Her roommate, Sophia, persuades Lindy to try online dating to clear her head for a while. Lindy dangerously uncovers a cyberstalker that sends her sinister videos of him murdering people that are close to her. Now, the NYPD and Lindy join forces to try to find this a serial killer, before it's too late.
Seasons: 10, discontinued
Scream: The TV Series
I've already watched this show twice, and I am planning to do it again. What's so intriguing about this show is how twisted everything is. Once you watch this show, you won't be able to stop.
Plot: After a student at Lakewood high school gets cyberbullied, it catalyzes a series of gruesome murders in a small town. Emma Duval is a teenage girl that attends Lakewood and is the serial killer's primary obsession. Emma will receive distorted phone calls from this killer frequently before and even after the murders take place. Now Emma has to team up with her classmates and try to take this murderer down once and for all.
Seasons: 2 seasons, renewed for 3rd season.
Hawaii Five-0
This is a show that you'll instantly fall in love with because of how intense, yet lovable, it is all at once. I mean seriously, all the characters are so likeable and the dynamic between them makes you feel that you are included in this top-notch team. Each episode is filled to the brim with action, witty banter and compelling plots that won't allow you to turn off the TV.
Plot: Hawaii Five-0 is an elite task force which strives to eliminate threats and crime on the beaches of the Aloha State. This team comprises of Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett, a third-generation navy veteran that created Hawaii Five-0 task force. Danny Williams who is in the second command, and Steve's best friend. We also have Detective Kono Kalakaua and Chin Ho Kelly.
Seasons: 9 seasons, ongoing
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
One of the reasons why this show is so addicting is because if you've seen enough of this show, then you know that they use the same formula for each episode. First, they start off with a gruesome murder that always ends with a women screaming hysterically. Second, they process the scene and start gathering fingerprints, etc. Third, they interrogate the suspects
and one of the CSI's have an epiphany and they drive a car really fast to the murderers whereabouts and they end up being a character that showed up in the beginning for 3 seconds. You may think that this will get boring after awhile, but sometimes they twist the ending and it makes you want to watch it all over again.
Plot: A group of close-knit forensic team in Las Vegas works together to solve crime in Sin City. D.B. Russell is the leader of the team, which comprises of Julie Finlay, Nick Stokes, Sara Sidle, Greg Sanders and Morgan Brody.
Seasons: 15
90210
The only way to sum up this show is that it's the Hollywood version of Gossip Girl. Seriously. I simultaneously watched Gossip Girl, and 90210 two years ago and some parts were so similar that I thought it was the same show.
Plot: West Beverly Hills High is a school filled with privileged, glamorous students that Annie
Wilson and her brother, Dixon Wilson will have to find their place in this school filled with intimidating students. The show carries on into the adulthood where the hardships of each character only grow.
Seasons: 5
Criminal Minds
Criminal Minds base a lot of their episodes on real-life occurrences. For example, the episode titled, "Our Darkest Hour" is about a serial killer who kills during blackouts in L.A. The case was based on the killer Richard Ramirez who murdered more than a dozen people in Los Angeles in 1980s. Yes, I know, this is a very dark introduction to a show I want people to watch. However, I need to say that the content exhibited in this show is brutal and it can be quite hard to finish an episode, so I don't recommend this show to everybody, people who are crime show lovers should check it out.
Plot: FBI profilers form an elite squad to uncover the country's most-twisted criminal minds and analyze the perpetrators next move with their high intelligence. We have Dr. Spencer Reid, Penelope Garcia, Jennifer Jareau, Derek Morgan and Aaron Hotchner, etc. are all apart of the Behavioural Analysis Unit (BAU).
